Sustainability is a value we live at Liwa International School – Al Mushrif (LISM). Through year-round recycling, creative student showcases, curriculum-linked field trips, and hands-on competitions, our students learn to care for the environment and lead positive change across our community.

Vision & Mission

Vision

To nurture responsible, innovative learners who lead environmental stewardship in the UAE and beyond.

Mission

We empower students to understand systems, take sustainable action, and positively impact our school and community through hands-on learning, partnerships, and leadership.

How We Lead

The Eco Club — with a student cabinet (TBA) and staff sustainability leads ( Ms. Sara El Tayara and Mr Sadiq Khan and Ms. Deb Lang ) — coordinates campaigns, data collection, events, and outreach. Students track progress, curate evidence, and mentor younger learners.

Sustainability in the Curriculum

Sustainability is embedded across subjects and grade levels through NGSS-aligned inquiry, engineering design projects, field investigations, and UAE-context case studies.Students regularly collect data, prototype solutions, and communicate their findings through presentations and exhibitions.

Internal School Activities

  • Simply Bottles (DGrade) – school-wide plastic bottle collection and awareness drives.

  • Re-CAPP – plastic and cans collection to build daily recycling habits (ongoing).

  • Environmental displays – Eco Code, Eco Pledge, and student work to inform and inspire.

  • Greening our campus – student-led planting and habitat improvement (In Progress).

  • Envirospellathon (SSI) – literacy-through-environment engagement (Planned).

  • KG Sustainability Fashion Show - Our KG learners design and model outits from safe, clean, recyclable materials — celebrating creativity, re-use, and confident communication.

Learning Trips

Purposeful field experiences connect curriculum to real-world sustainability, including visits to Masdar City, Gracia Farms, Jebel Ali Marine Sanctuary & Recycling Facility, Shams Solar Park, Expo City Sustainability Pavilion, Jubail Mangrove Park, and more.

Jebel Ali Marine Sanctuary (Eco Committee, 30 Jan 2024) — Students led a coastal clean-up, sorted collected debris, and discussed how individual actions protect marine habitats.

Emirates Park Zoo (Grade 3, 7 Dec 2023 & 19 Nov 2024) — Classes joined a guided conservation tour, took part in a sustainability talk, and practiced the 3Rs through hands-on activities.

Jebel Ali Recycling Facility/MRF (Grade 6, 8 Feb 2024) — Students toured the sorting and baling lines, competed in recycling/sorting challenges, and created an upcycled wall-art panel.

Masdar City (Grade 7, 12 Feb 2024, Grade 4, 21 Nov 2024) — Groups investigated passive cooling and renewable-energy features, interviewed guides, and completed a mini environmental audit for “future city” ideas.

Expo City – Sustainability Pavilion (Eco Committee, 15 May 2024) – Students rotated through interactive stations, tested simple water- filtration setups, and reflected during the “Would You Rather” sustainability show.

Gracia Farms (Grades 2, 1, Eco Committee, Nov 2024 & 21 Nov 2024) — Learners observed hydroponic and aquaponic systems, traced the seed-to-table process, and compared water-saving techniques in UAE farming.

Shams Solar Park & Al Dhafra Innovation Center (Grade 6, 25 Nov 2024) — Students explored utility-scale solar installations, joined energy workshops, and connected capacity/output to everyday electricity use.

Jubail Mangrove Park (Grade 9, 14 Nov 2024) — Students walked the boardwalk to study blue-carbon ecosystems, mapped biodiversity, and documented how mangroves filter water and buffer coasts.

Competitions & Student Leadership

Students apply engineering design and scientific thinking through the Bin Harmal Educational Award, ADNOC Net Zero Challenge, Climate Action awards, and school showcases such as the Eco T-shirt Design. The Eco Club leads campaigns, data collection, and mentoring for younger learners.

Bin Harmal Educational Award (2023) —

Two school teams built working prototypes, presented their engineering design process to judges, and earned a school-level Second Place recognition.

Bin Harmal Educational Award (2024) —

Two STEM teams refined problem statements, iterated models with Mr. Robert (DT), and presented cross-curricular posters linking science and design.

Bin Harmal Educational Award (2025) —

Teams prepared proposals and testable models, attended organizer trainings, and rehearsed pitches ahead of the Al Ain showcase.

ADNOC Net Zero Challenge (2024) —

Eight high school groups conducted baseline energy/waste audits ; five were shortlisted and developed reduction plans with KPI targets.

Burjeel–Oxford Climate Change Challenge (2023) —

Students created a research- backed proposal (video/essay) on climate solutions and advanced to the next round.

Climate Action Award (2024) —

Eco Club leaders designed a school-wide climate action campaign, tracked impact metrics, and achieved a Top-5 recognition.

Eco T-Shirt Design (2023) —

Students designed sustainability-themed graphics; the school hosted a showcase and community voting to select winners.

Simply Bottles Recycling Competition (2023–2025) —

Classes ran bottle-collection drives, weighed and logged totals, and submitted monthly tallies to DGrade.

ReCAPP School Recycling Drive (ongoing) —

Student leaders coordinated pick-ups, verified sorting, and reported collection data to the platform.

Impact Dashboard

Update these figures each term/year before publishing.

Academic Year Kilograms of CO2 Reduced Kilograms Recycled Trips Completed Awards /Recognitions

How our Families can get Involved

Please contribute at home and at school:

  • Sort and send clean, dry plastic bottles and cans on designated collection days.
  • Volunteer for trip supervision or campus clean-ups (contact the Eco Club Lead).
  • Share sustainability ideas, speakers, or venues for student learning.
  • Encourage re-use (bring refillable bottles, use recyclable materials for projects).

What’s Next (Future Focus)

Next, we’re focusing on three priorities: applying for Lead School status and mentoring adopted schools through learning walks, shared resources, and coaching; launching a Trainer-of-Trainers(TOT) program to certify environmental educator champions who will cascade PD across departments; and strengthening our Green School Audit (GSA) with student-led teams (Energy, Water, Waste, Biodiversity, Transport/Wellbeing ) that collect baseline data, run interventions, and publish a termly Impact Dashboard to track real improvements.
